Their upcoming collaboration which is tentatively titled KH x RK reunion marks one of Tamil cinema’s most significant partnerships in decades. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar the project was launched recently with a powerful promo video that instantly captured public attention. Now the latest reports regarding the movie underscores that the Beast director is clearly expanding his vision for the film.

Filming to start only after current commitments

Reports from Filmibeat suggest that both lead stars will begin filming only after completing their ongoing projects. Rajinikanth has wrapped major work including the Nelson directorial Jailer 2. After the KH x RK promo shoot, he is taking a brief break. If the timeline stays stable, he will begin shooting Thalaivar 173 in April 2026 produced by Kamal Haasan. Only after that project concludes will he join KH x RK. Kamal Haasan too must complete his remaining commitments before stepping into Nelson’s film. This makes late 2026 or early 2027 the expected starting point.

Mammootty rumoured to join the cast

A major industry buzz now surrounds Mammootty who has reportedly been approached for a guest role. If the rumours hold true, he will appear as an “old gangster friend” of Kamal Haasan’s character.

A report shared by the Twitter page Hey Opinions states, “Almost confirmed! #Mammootty will play a guest role in the #KHxRK movie as an old gangster friend of #KamalHaasan’s character. Kamal has always wanted to share the screen with Mammootty, and it was his suggestion to bring Mammootty on board for the film...!”

A rare on-screen combination

Unconfirmed reports also claim that the megastar’s character will be linked closely to Kamal Haasan’s arc. If the deal is finalised, KH x RK will create multiple iconic reunions. It would bring Rajinikanth and Mammootty together again after decades. It would also mark the first on-screen collaboration between Mammootty and Kamal Haasan. Earlier there were reports saying Mohanlal will be playing the villain character in Nelsons film.
