Vijayawada: Justice Lisa Gill, who is presently working as a judge in the Punjab and Haryana high court, will become the first woman chief justice of the Andhra Pradesh high court. The Supreme Court collegium, in its recent meeting, recommended the transfer of Justice Gill to the Andhra Pradesh high court and to appoint her as Chief Justice when the vacancy arises.
The Supreme Court took a key policy decision while recommending the transfer of Justice Gill, to transfer the judges proposed to be appointed as Chief Justice well in advance. The collegium, in a statement, said that the policy decision was taken in order to strengthen the efficiency and quality administration of justice.
A judge who is proposed to take over the high court as its Chief Justice may be transferred well in advance, preferably two months before the vacancy arises, so that such recommendee in the meantime becomes well conversant with the affairs of that high court and assumes charge of the office of the Chief Justice, on the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice, the statement added.
Justice Gill will be the first judge to be transferred under the new policy and will take over as the Chief Justice after the incumbent Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur retires in April.
