A Georgia police officer was killed and another seriously injured Sunday while responding to a fraud-related call at a hotel near Stone Mountain, authorities said.

The officer who died was 25-year-old Pradeep Tamang, who was born in Nepal and moved to the United States about ten years ago. He had joined the Gwinnett County Police Department in 2025 and was engaged to be married. The injured officer, David Reed, was taken to a hospital in serious but stable condition.

The shooting happened around 7:30 am at a hotel on East Park Place Boulevard. Police said the officers were responding to a report of fraudulent activity related to a hotel room.

According to the police, Tamang and Reed went to a hotel room connected to the fraud. The suspect, 35-year-old Kevin Andrews, invited them inside. Authorities said Andrews then opened fire without warning. One of the officers returned fire, wounding Andrews.

All three were taken to hospitals. Tamang died from his injuries. Reed remains hospitalized. Authorities said Andrews is expected to survive.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is leading the investigation, which is standard for officer-involved shootings in Georgia. The Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office will review the case once the investigation is complete.

Governor Brian Kemp issued a statement praising the officers for their service, offering condolences to Tamang’s family, and prayers for Reed’s recovery.

This is the first line-of-duty death for the Gwinnett County Police Department in 2026. Police officials encouraged the public to support the officers’ families and noted that official channels are available to provide help.

Authorities said they are reviewing hotel security footage and collecting evidence from the scene. No additional suspects are reported.
