The Winter Session of Parliament enters a crucial phase on Monday as both Houses prepare for a charged and lengthy discussion on the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’. What was once a unifying rallying cry during India’s freedom struggle has now become the centre of a fierce ideological contest between the BJP and the Opposition. Day 6 of the session promises sharp exchanges, strong historical claims and renewed political posturing.
PM Modi to lead the debate in Lok Sabha: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will open the discussion in the Lok Sabha, marking a significant moment in the session. The government sees this debate not just as a tribute to a national song but as an opportunity to highlight its cultural and political message.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will also speak for the BJP, emphasising themes that have long inspired the party’s nationalist base.
On the Opposition side, senior Congress leaders including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Gaurav Gogoi are slated to participate. Their speeches are expected to counter the BJP’s interpretation of history and challenge the ruling party’s framing of Vande Mataram as a political symbol.
10 hours allotted for the debate: The Lok Sabha has allotted 10 hours for the debate, with the BJP-led NDA receiving a dedicated three-hour slot. The Rajya Sabha will take up the discussion on Tuesday, 9 December, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah set to lead the government’s arguments in the Upper House.
According to BJP sources, the party plans to reveal “important and lesser-known facts” surrounding the legacy of Vande Mataram, signalling a sharper political narrative aimed at cornering Congress.
Meanwhile, Congress will field eight speakers in the Lok Sabha, including Deepender Hooda, Bimol Akoijam, Praniti Shinde and Jyotsna Mahant, ensuring a robust Opposition presence.
The debate forms part of a special parliamentary focus on commemorating 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’, written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee. With the Winter Session running from 1 to 19 December, Day 6 stands out as an important moment in the ongoing ideological tussle shaping national politics.
