The government is expected to bring G RAM G Bill to replace MGNREGA, which is set to be introduced in the Lok Sabha during the ongoing Winter session of Parliament.

Parliament Winter session Day 11 Highlights The Union Government on Monday (December 15, 2025) defended the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the Rajya Sabha and said the guiding principle for the exercise was universal adult franchise. During a discussion on electoral reforms, the Opposition, meanwhile, continued to attack the Centre over the SIR. .

SIR not new, part of democratic process: J.P Nadda to Rajya Sabha

It is the mandate of the Election Commission to prepare and purify the electoral rolls, says JP Nadda. The provisions of the Constitution gives the EC the power to conduct elections and to ensure that no eligible voter is left out of the list, and no ineligible voter is included in the list.

He specifies that there are conditions to be included in the voter list, with the first criterion being that an individual must be a citizen of India.

The SIR is not new, it is part of the democratic process, he says. He highlights that it took place in 1952, 1957, 1961, 1965, 1983, 1987-1989, 1992, 2002, and 2004, noting that save for the one occasion where it took place under Atal Bihari Vajpayee, SIR has happened under Congress Prime Ministers.

They should consider why the SIR was required now, and notes that this is a periodic process of purification of voter lists.

For decades, EC functioning responsibility of one party, no questions of mistrust then: JP Nadda

For decades, the responsibility to look after the functioning of the election commission was with one party, in fact, with one family, but there were no questions of mistrusting it then, says Leader of the House J.P Nadda.

He asserts that the Modi government is always ready to discuss important issues. He highlights that this debate has lasted for 10 hours, and he is the 58th speaker.

There has been an effort to create an atmosphere about the SIR, as if there is something dubious going on, he says, adding that words like vote-chori and vote chor are being used. He expresses surprise that the Congress party is engaging in such allegations.
